What is addition?
Addition means putting two or more groups together to find how many in all. When you add 3 apples and 2 apples, you get 5 apples total.
4 + 3 = 7
Push two groups of counters together. Count all. That is addition.

What is a sum?
A sum is the answer you get when you add two or more numbers together. In 3 + 4 = 7, the number 7 is the sum.
6 + 2 → sum 8
The answer to an adding problem is the sum. Draw 5 dots, then 3 more; count all. The sum is 8.

What is subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away from a group to find how many are left. If you have 8 grapes and eat 3, you subtract to find 5 are left.
7 − 2 = 5
Start with a pile. Take some away. Count what stays. That is subtraction.

What is a difference?
A difference is the answer you get when you subtract one number from another. In 9 − 4 = 5, the number 5 is the difference.
8 − 3 → difference 5
Build two cube towers. Count the extra cubes on the taller one. That extra is the difference.

What is an equation?
An equation is a number sentence that uses an equal sign to show that two sides have the same value. 3 + 2 = 5 is an equation.
4 + 1 = 5
Both sides of = must be the same amount. Story: you pick 6 flowers and 3 more. Write 6 + 3 = 9.

What does = mean?
The equal sign (=) means “the same as.” It tells you that the amount on the left side is the same as the amount on the right side.
3 + 4 = 6 + 1
The left is 7, the right is 7. Both match. The equation is true. Read = as “the same as.”
