What to put on the wall, and what to leave off. Grade 1 art cards care about line, shape, color, texture, pattern, foreground and background. Hang the six jobs below. Leave room around them.
Do
- Alphabet line at child height.
- Number line to 120, or as far as you will actually use.
- Calendar.
- Weather chart (ties to Earth, Weather, and Seasons).
- Word wall with room to change the words.
- A map of the classroom, then a map of Orlando, then a globe when you get to Geography and Maps.
Do not
Cover every inch. Grade 1 art lessons care about line, shape, color, texture, pattern, foreground and background. A wall that shouts all six at once is noise.
How to hang a wall
- Put the alphabet line at child height, not teacher height.
- Hang a number line as far as you will actually use. To 120 is plenty for Grade 1.
- Leave a calendar and a weather chart where the class can change them.
- Keep a word wall with empty slots. A wall that shouts every art element at once is noise.
